 WINTEC ‘CUT’ SHORT FILM AWARDS

Waihi College celebrates success with a talented group of students at the Wintec ‘Cut!’ Short Film Competition .   Their entry, ‘Before Midnight’, was nominated in several categories and took out two major prizes.  The team, who are widely known on YouTube as Chicken Water Movies, include students Jakob Twidle, Iain Collings, Laurie Ruttersmith and Alex Twidle, with a guest appearance by Eden Bray.  ‘Before Midnight’ follows the story of a hit man who realises the nature of his profession and sets out to redeem himself.

The Chicken Water Movies team attended the Finalists Awards Screening on Sunday October 9 at Wintec’s Gallagher Hub, where all ten movies were screened and three judges announced the winners of the top awards.  ‘Before Midnight’ picked up awards for Best Design (Jakob) and Best Original Music (Alex).  They were also nominated for Best Editing and Best Cinematography.  The team received over $3000 in prizes, including several Adobe Suite products, recording time at the Wintec studio and art vouchers.

 COROGAT 24HOUR FILM COMPETITION

Following in the footsteps of Chicken Water Movies, who won this award last year with their short film 'Bagman', are a new team of media talents.  Waihi College takes 1st prize again this year with a film by Hayden Silberer, James Rotohiko and Jazz Lord.  Congratulations!

 ARTS WAIKATO COMMUNITY ARTS AWARDS

The schools performing arts group, Troupe Waihi, were selected by Arts Waikato as one of four schools shortlisted for the new category of Creative School of the Year in this year’s Waikato Community Arts Awards. Troupe representatives, Sequoia Erickson, Jessie Twidle and Lewis Campbell,  travelled to the Awards Evening at Southwell School on Wednesday 5 October, where they were announced as Runners Up.  Guest speaker and senior lecturer for Te Ara Poutama at AUT, Ella Henry, spoke at the awards night about her work in Maori film and television.  Our Troupe students are still talking about her speech and particularly identified with her when she spoke about how the arts can transform communities.

The Arts at Waihi College have truly thrived this year, increasing opportunities for youth to gain skills, knowledge and experience, giving them the tools to develop creative career pathways.
