Every year, as the colours, laughter, and energy of Spirit Days fill Waihī College, there’s a deeper heartbeat that runs through it all — one of remembrance, connection, and aroha. This beloved tradition began in 1988, thanks to teachers Mr Moyle and Mr Mueller, and the many staff who helped bring it to life. It was created to honour Martin Barber, a much-loved physics teacher whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident. His loss deeply affected the Waihī community, and so Spirit Days were born as a way to celebrate the things Martin valued most — fun, friendship, and school spirit.
Martin’s parents later donated a cup in his memory, now awarded to the winning house each year. Their gesture ensured that every cheer, chant, and shared laugh would continue to keep Martin’s spirit alive. Over the years, the meaning of Spirit Days has grown even deeper.
Since Martin’s passing, we also remember and celebrate many others who touched our lives here at Waihī College. We have the Jodi Alsdorf Shield which is named after Jodi Alsdorf who passed away in 1994. Jodi’s family donated the shield to be awarded to the ‘Senior with the Most Spirit’ each year in honour of Jodi’s warmth, enthusiasm, and bubbly nature. We also have the Emilie Silberer Cup. This cup was donated by Emilie’s family after her passing in 2012 and is awarded to the ‘Junior with the Most Spirit’ in honour of Emilie’s love for life. Each Spirit Days we remember Martin, Jodi, Emilie and so many others who have been a huge part of the Waihi College whānau. Spirit Days is a celebration of life itself. We honour all those we have lost, and are reminded that our school community is built on the love and memories of those who have walked these halls before us. Each relay, tug-of-war, and burst of laughter carries the legacy of those we’ve lost and honours the joy they brought to our lives.
Every year, as students paint their faces, rally their houses, and give their all, they are continuing a tradition that is both joyful and deeply meaningful. Spirit Days are a time for us to remember, to celebrate, and to feel grateful for the whānau that makes Waihī College what it is — a place where aroha, resilience, and unity shine bright.
He taonga te whanaungatanga — relationships are a treasure. And at Waihī College, Spirit Days are one of our most treasured ways of keeping that spirit alive.
