On the first of March, 2022 our student-led team of designers, researchers, and painters embarked on the journey of creating a mural to go above the doors of our school hall to represent what our school is about, the people in it and a representation of each of our school houses, Amaranth, Dominion, Empire and Royal.

Our team consists of mostly students with two teachers, Chrissy and Ana-Lee to supervise and help with painting, leading, and other various tasks.

Our designated leaders are Shaedyn and Neisha, both of whom are also student leaders for our school this year. The other members of our team are Rangimarie (who is also a student leader), Aaliyah, Baylee, Marissa, Jayden, Zac, Jean, Dontay, Enni & Jason.

It was important we captured the essence of school life, as well as the local aspects surrounding us that make our community both inside and outside of school. On the journey of the mural, we were able to learn a great deal about the importance of tikanga, and whanaungatanga. A dynamic group of students with very different skills and personalities able to work together as a team to produce a cohesive composition over the period of a semester.

On this fine day, during the first week of our Mural project, the entire team practiced their technical skills, as well as learnt some new skills, such as how to properly add layers to paintings, as well as how to properly use colour theory in order to mix certain colours together, all of these lessons helped us greatly with the process of creating our school mural, as well as generally increasing the quality of the art piece itself.

During the second week of our Mural project, everyone in our team was in the process of planning the Mural, this is because this is a very important piece of artwork that will be up in the assembly hall for years to come, so we had to spend a whole day and a bit of extra time throughout the projects span in order to come up with decent ideas for how this mural was going to look, due to the sheer importance and scale of the whole art piece.

During the third week of our Mural project, everyone in our team was in the process of gathering resources for our mural, this included finding photos of the area surrounding our school, which included Waihi, Waihi Beach, and Karangahake Gorge, this was done in order to get some references, as well as a final idea for what the mural was going to look like once it was finished.

During the fourth week of the Mural project, everyone in our team was in the process of making the mural, a large group of people mainly helped with preparing and priming the mural boards and then split of into smaller groups to do shorter tasks towards the end of the day like creating stencils, gathering references, writing blurbs and emailing Mr Roy for some help with woodworking stuff.

During the fifth week of the Mural project, all of the members of the team were doing different tasks, however, some of the main tasks that we were doing was painting and researching, since we were actually starting to create our mural by this time, but some people were still trying to find references by this time, and others were priming (preparing) the plywood.

During the sixth week of the Mural project, most of the members of our team were mainly focusing on either painting, the blog site, or they were focusing on sanding down some of the smaller boards so we could start on our tukutuku panels later down the line, however, there were some people focusing on other tasks that were still considered important, this mostly included things such as photography and cleaning.

During the seventh week of the mural project, most of the members of our team were focusing fully on either the blog site, or focusing on painting the mural. This week was mostly about putting our heads down to get as much as we could done to make up for the lost time over the upcoming holidays

During the eighth week of the mural project, after the two week gap over the school holidays, we got right back into business, which mostly involved continuing to work on either the website for our mural, or the mural itself, since by this point, most of us were focusing on our one key task, which was either working on the website, painting on the mural, or doing some photography.

This week, some of the team set their main focus on taking photos of all of our members, pulling them away at times to take some more formal photos for the ‘about’ section of the website. The rest were all were working on finishing the base layers of the leaves for the tree, working out where all of the finer details will go on the mural like bushes and waves and creating a final prototype of the website.

During the tenth week of the mural project, we were continuing to work hard on the project, this is when we began spray painting leaves into certain parts of the mural for extra details, and continued to work on the landscape of the mural. We had some people working on the website, adding photos to the website and adding some extra details. The prototype was also shown to the group as a proof of concept which was met with a positive reception.

During the eleventh week of progress, we continued to work on the mural project, although at this point, it was more so about adding smaller improvements and generally making the mural itself look nicer, ensuring it is at as high a quality as the last few murals this school has had in the last few decades, since this mural is supposed to be staying up for 20 or so years, and generally needs to stand the test of time.

During the twelfth week of progress, the painting team had decided that all of the bush areas were too plain and were dissatisfied with the amount of nature in the mural. The painting team decided that they were going to redo some sections of the mural to have more plant and flowers and add more texture to the plants that already existed. The website making had slown down this week as most of the team who was working on it was out at that time.

7/06/2022

This week, our group of students that have focused on making the website spent most of today actually talking to one of the schools’ staff, Wendy, about transferring our blog from wix/google sites to the official Waihi College website, where more people will be likely to see the progress blog. To which the team decided would be for the best.

During this time, the rest of the students who were in charge of making the mural were mostly painting, however, some were doing bird paintings, and adding some final touches to the mural itself, however, the ‘Dominion’ part of the mural is still a work in progress, since there are a few ideas being thrown around.

On top of these things, the Tukutuku panels are almost completely finished, which is a very good sign, and we also got one of the teachers, ‘Mr Roy’ to make the frame for the entire Mural once it is actually finished.

14/06/2022

During the fourteenth week of progress, we have still been adding some of the final touches to the mural, such as branches on the main tree, and adding some more grass to the landscape, mainly to ensure the quality of this piece remains high; although we have been working on other tasks, this mainly included finishing the tukutuku panels, finishing the pou, and also finishing up the blog, which just needed a bit of work done in order to make it look good and to also properly record everything down in a nice format.

Today was relatively calm and chill however, since today was send off for whaea Ana-lee, so we decided to take most of the day off to celebrate and having a shared lunch with her, which means that the work ethic for that day decreased.

21/06/2022

During the fifteenth week, we worked on the final touches for the mural. We also decided we should be adding the house colours to the leaves, as some houses like empire were severely underrepresented in the mural.

We also started putting the final touches on the pou and working on the tukutuku panels.

07/07/2022

On this day, a couple of us (Chrissy, Neisha, Marissa, Baylee, Aalyah, Zac & Jason) came back to the art room after school to finish the pou and tukutuku panels and clean up the chalk and pencil marks on the mural
