Last month, 11 of our Kapa Haka students had an amazing 10-day cultural trip to Southern Taiwan.
The students visited seven schools, including National Chaochou Senior High School and Jhong Jheng Senior High School, where we signed a new sister school deal. They performed and shared our culture, making many local friends and being treated like superstars! The students also got a real taste of Taiwanese life by staying with host families.
Key moments included a powerful performance for the chief of the Paiwan tribe and visiting the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park. We had a great time exploring the huge Dream Plaza mall and busy night markets. They even learned to make moon cakes and bubble tea! The trip ended with a spectacular Appreciation Night featuring dragon dances.
A massive thank you to Matua Ngawehe and Whaea TeAwhi, the students’ families, and our sponsors, Oceana Gold Waihi and Split Set Mining Systems, and all who assisted with fundraising, for making this unforgettable trip happen. Our students were fantastic ambassadors for Waihi College!
