We are very excited to be part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako (Healthy School Lunches Programme) where every student at Waihi College receives a free lunch, every day.
Menu Sample
Here is a sample menu from Term 1, 2025.
Students with specific dietary requirements such as allergies, vegan and vegetarian are also catered for. These requirements are provided to us via a school wide survey where whanau and students detail any dietary needs.
They are interested in your feedback and there are several ways you can let them know what you think about the lunches so far. Check them out below or head directly to their website by clicking this link.

Kai Care Packs / Surplus Lunches
In early 2022 Waihi College set up an initiative called ‘Kai Care Packs’ where we used surplus ingredients from our Free Lunches Programme and turned them into meals for the freezer. These meals enabled us to assist lots of local families, primary schools and daycare centres who were unable to get out and about due to COVID or other illnesses. The packs were made up with the help of students and staff who gave up a lunchtime each Wednesday to create the meals under the guidance of our cooking and hospitality guru Siobhan Fitzgerald. The initiative was started with Siobhan, Tracy Te Wake (our staff Wellbeing Leader) and Wendy Shave (our Arts, Services & Communications Coordinator).
Once the Free Lunches system changed to providing individual meals rather than ingredients, we were able to give away any un-collected meals to the community. After more recent changes to the Free Lunch programme, any un-collected meals now go back to the provider. This means we currently do have any meals we can give out. If you or anyone you know needs help with kai, please still get in touch as we would love to find a way to still help if possible.
