Spirit Days has been a Waihi College tradition since 1988 and was introduced by Waihi College teachers Mr Moyle and Mr Mueller to honour Martin Barber.  Martin was Waihi College’s much beloved physics teacher, but sadly lost his life in a car accident which shocked the whole community.  Martin loved fun, spirit and comradery and Mr Moyle and Mr Mueller wanted his life to be celebrated in a way Martin would have loved.  Martin’s parents later donated a cup for the House that won Spirit Days.

We also lost beautiful, bubbly student Jodi Alsdorf to her fight against cancer in 1994 –  her parents donated a shield which became the ‘Jodi Alsdorf Shield for the Student with the Most Spirit’.

In 2011 Vance Williams and Dylan Perkinson tragically died in a car crash.  They were the life of the party and everyone always had an amazing time in their presence.  And in 2012, we also lost Emilie Silberer; she too had a huge passion for life and an incredible spirit.

It is because of these people we celebrate Spirit Days each year.

The whole school participates in fun activities – some old, some new – and we all just get crazy to honour these amazing people.

Dress up days, lip syncs or tic tok battles, balloons pops, tug of war, beam pillow fights and chariot races to name a few.
