We were absolutely honoured to welcome Sir Wayne Smith and Sir John Kirwan to our assembly earlier this week.
To have two leaders of such calibre spend meaningful time with our students was a privilege we certainly did not take lightly. A panel of our own rangatahi had the opportunity to ask thoughtful and courageous questions about leadership, setbacks, resilience and purpose. Watching our students stand confidently, engage deeply and listen with such respect truly reflected the very best of Waihi College. It was a proud moment for our whole school community.
Both of our guests shared stories that went far beyond sport. They spoke about humility, the value of hard work in the quiet moments, the strength that comes from working together, and the courage it takes to reset and grow. Importantly, they reminded us that reaching out for help is not a weakness — it is wisdom. Sir Wayne’s quiet strength and belief in collective excellence reinforced that high standards and strong relationships go hand in hand. Sir John’s honesty about his own wellbeing journey powerfully highlighted the importance of hauora and looking after one another.
We are deeply grateful for the authenticity of their stories and the genuine way they connected with our young people. Moments like this strengthen our sense of purpose and remind us what true leadership looks like in action.
