BYOD (Bring Your own Device)

BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device.  Many schools have adopted this policy across their whole school.  From 2021, all students in the senior school who need to use a device for their learning, should bring a device from home.  This could be in the form of a chrome book, laptop or ipad but not a cell phone.

Courses that require use of a device have indicated this in their course outlines.

If you do not have or are unable to purchase a device, Waihi College will engage in a device lease contract with the student and their families to issue a device (bond required).

Please contact Jo Howell if you have any queries and also check out the information below in regard to a good priced option:

As always, students/parents can purchase from wherever they choose, this is just one option of many.

School Policies

S.A.M Agreement

Step it Up – Always be Prepared – Manaakitanga

Another change in 2021 is the removal of A detentions. This has been replaced with S.A.M agreements which is a restorative based practice. The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) restorative practice model focuses on building and maintaining positive, respectful relationships across the school community and offers school staff best-practice tools and techniques to restore relationships when things go wrong.

‘A detentions’ have been around for a long time and, after looking at the data, they have proven to be unsuccessful in improving behaviour.

The S.A.M agreement is focused on “keeping the mana with the teacher”. If a student is not displaying the school values and expectations we have for them in the classroom, and does not respond to classroom management strategies they may find themselves on a S.A.M agreement.

Basically, the agreement requires both teacher and student to discuss and agree on a way to improve the student’s behaviour and put in any supports that can help the student follow the expectations and values required in class so learning can take place. It also ensures that Pouako and parents are notified and kept up to date with the students’ progress so they too can support their student/child to make positive change.

If you have any concerns or queries about these changes please contact us on 07 863 8349.
